In May 2020, it was necessary to cut down the large Cedrus Libani that was rooting above an embankment in the internal courtyard of the Palace.
It was a Cedrus Libani of exceptional size (circumference of 453 cm and height of approximately 17 m) which played a notable role as an ornamental tree in the surrounding landscape.
The tree was registered in the Mipaaf List of Monumental Trees of Italy at no. 29/L483/UD/06. The trunk of the plant was partially attacked by xylophagous fungi (causes of brown rot), which seemed to have compromised the mechanical resistance of the tissues. The reasons why the decision was made to cut down the tree were, on the one hand, the visible decay present at the base of the trunk and, on the other, the dangerous inclination of the trunk itself.
The care and attention, also on the part of the owners, towards the specimen, allowed the felling to be postponed until the residual risk became unacceptable and no longer mitigable through normal good arboriculture interventions.
The felling work began on 4 May 2020 and ended on 22 May 2020.
The felling was carried out by tree-climbing and without the aid of cranes, also and above all due to the difficult access conditions to the site: the courtyard inside which the specimen radicava, in fact, can be reached from the road only by crossing the main entrance, passing a first internal courtyard and then walking along a narrow uphill passage that emerges into the garden, close to the walls of the Castle of Udine.
Throughout the year, cultural meetings and guided tours are organized at Palazzo Pavona Asquini.
